Not a single drop shall go to waste

GC Rieber VivoMega produces world-class concentrated fish oil. It is widely known that omega-3 is important for health, but not everyone is aware that by-products from production can also create value.

By by-products we mean the parts of the fish oil that are not used to produce Omega-3 concentrates. Our by products contain many valuable fatty acids and are, among other things, good sources of nutrition and energy. Rather than letting the by-products go to waste, we at GC Rieber want to recycle these valuable raw materials back into the food chain.

At our factory in Kristiansund, the fish oil is processed in a high-tech facility. Here, we produce omega-3 concentrates for several different health purposes. In this process, utilization of by-products is also high on the agenda. We believe that our raw material has such a high utility that not a drop should go to waste.

For several years, by-products from our production have therefore been used for various purposes such as animal feed, biofuel, soil improvement and biogas.

In recent years, our focus has been on animal feed, and we believe that this is where the by-products can be of greatest benefit.
This investment has yielded results, and from 2018 to 2021, the proportion of by-products used for animal feed has risen from 29% to 61%.

Another important focus area has been to reduce emissions in connection with transport. From 2016 to 2021, the share of by-products sold domestically has increased from 5% to a whopping 54%
This means fewer transport kilometers and greater use of bulk transport by boat.

Working purposefully with our by-products is a good example of how GC Rieber VivoMega works with circular economy to achieve our sustainability goals.
